 Bodmin Instructor

Ian Mudie began training in 1989 with full contact kickboxing, when the club he was training at closed in 1992 he joined the newly opened Bodmin Lau Gar Kung Fu school.

After two years Ian realised Lau Gar lacked the street effectiveness he was looking for and began crosstraining in Judo, Aikido, freestyle karate and Taekwon-do. In 1995 he heard about Sifu Bob Gilchrist of Impact Martial Arts Academy Newquay and after one lesson stopped all other training to concentrate on Jeet Kune Do, Kali and Silat.

When Sifu Bob was forced to retire due to ill health in 1997 Sifu Ian took over the Newquay school and began his instructors training with Sifu Dave Carnell. Soon after Rich Jahn, who had previously trained with Ian in kickboxing and Lau Gar and had in the intervening years been studying Thai Boxing joined the school. Rich now runs the Ireland Academy.

Ian first started training in Bjj in 1998 with Canadian blue belt Paul Burton while he was back in the UK visiting his family for six months.Training continued with seminars until regular instuction began with Master Carlos Lemos in 2006, Ian recieved his blue belt in 2007. When Carlos returned to the USA, Raphael Dos Santos moved to Cornwall and started teaching all the Impact Cornwall bjj and grappling classes.

Bodmin school was opened in October 1999. The increasing number of students made a full time academy possible which opened on Cooksland Industrial Estate in May 2002, by late summer the academy had out grown the premises and moved to a larger unit on Woods-Browning Industrial Estate in November. The academy is now equipped with cage, heavy bags, training dummies (and no we dont mean the students), stick dummy, wooden dummy, matted area for grappling, a weights and fitness room and martial arts equipment shop.

Redruth Instructor

Tim has been studying Brazilian Jiu jitsu since 2005. Prior to that he studied JKD and Kali.

“ I feel that Bjj is more than just a martial art and sport, it can become a lifestyle that encourages you to eat more healthily not drink too much and generally enhances your overall fitness.

I also think that if you have to choose one martial art to do for self defence Bjj is the most effective in real terms”

Born in 1966, Tim competes when he can and whilst at blue belt won gold at the IBJJF Europeans 2009 at both his weight and open weight categories.

Tim is currently a Purple Belt.
